Croatia Travel: Island named UNESCO World Heritage Site
08 July 2008
The Croatian island of Hvar is among six European sites added to the UNESCO World Heritage List at a meeting in Quebec City, Canada, this week.
Committee members spent almost a week considering 45 worldwide candidates to add to its list of architectural and natural wonders, Agence France-Presse reports.
Hvar's cultural landscape, which has been farmed and remained intact since first being colonised in the 4th century, is reported to have influenced the decision.
Stari Grad Plain, as the site on the Adriatic island is known, "bears testimony to the ancient geometrical system of land division use by Ancient Greeks", the committee said.
The news provider reports cultivations of grapes and olives have been evident on the island ever since.
A recent travel guide to the island from Canada.com described it as a "study in contrasts".
Hvar is said to offer visitors stunning views of the Adriatic and is adorned with olive groves, pine trees and vineyards, while there is also a thriving nightclub scene for younger visitors.
