Croatia Travel: Visitor numbers expected to rise in 2008

Three per cent more arrivals are expected in Croatia during this year's tourist season, according to the Croatia Tourism Community (HTZ).

A five per cent rise is also anticipated for the season overall, javno.com reports.

Damir Bajs, the Croatian tourism minister, told the news provider efforts have been made on specific markets like Japan, France, Spain and Russia to boost numbers.

Meanwhile, Niko Bulic, director at HTZ, told the website the country has "to be sober optimists" regarding the tourist season.

He added: "We have to be good hosts to have a good season."

The World Tourism Organisation has also predicted an increase in visitors to Croatia in 2008, anticipating a three to four per cent rise.

It was revealed recently by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics the number of foreign tourists in the country in the first quarter of the year increased by 30 per cent to 285,688.

There were 9.3 million visitors to Croatia last year, an increase of seven per cent on 2006 figures.
