Croatia becoming 'summer destination of choice'

Croatia's "dramatic" coast and "unhurried" pace of life are making it the summer destination of choice, according to one travel expert.

Writing in the Times, John Bungey also singled out the country's "shimmering green-blue waters" and seaside accommodation as perfect for family holidays.

He described his children's delight at staying in a villa "of the sort you would expect in France or Italy", complete with pool, plasma TV and three bathrooms.

"We have headed to Dalmatia before (Dubrovnik, Split, etc) but the peninsula of Istria is emptier, greener and, in its way, just as inviting," Mr Bungey explained.

He continued: "From our house on the edge of the village of Mofardini, a patchwork of tiny fields and wildflower meadows rolled down to a silver sliver of the Adriatic, 12 miles away."

The travel enthusiast went on to point out that the village appeared to be "lost in time", with minimal traffic on the roads.

He compared the north of the area to Italy, with its "rolling countryside, dotted with olive trees and small vineyards".

Previous holidaymakers have dubbed Istria the "gastronomic heart" of Croatia on account of its wine output and culinary delights.ADNFCR-1197-ID-18462721-ADNFCR
