Croatia brings in anti-smoking laws
30 September 2008
The Croatian government has today (September 30th) passed legislation banning smoking in public areas, it has been reported.
According to Javno.com, the final Bill on the Limitations of Use of Tobacco Products has been formally adopted.
Smoking in all public areas is now set to be banned, while persons under the age of 18 will be prohibited from buying cigarettes.
The news provider states the law will be enforced in hospitals and schools eight days after its announcement in the Official Gazette, while restaurants will have six months to comply with the legislation.
Darko Milinovic, the country's health minister, is reported as saying the new rules do not require employers to "secure a smoking area" but can choose to do so as long as it does not take up over 20 per cent of an entire office.
Earlier this month, Associated French Press had indicated the legislation was close to being brought into force.
It stated smoking will be banned inside pubs but still allowed on terraces outside, while restaurants will need to have separate rooms for people to have a cigarette where food consumption will not be allowed.
