Croatia celebrates Labour Day

International Labour Day is being celebrated in cities and towns across Croatia today.

The capital, Zagreb, is the central location of commemoration, with the city government putting aside 250,000 kuna (£27,000) for the occasion, the Croatian news provider Javno reports.

Mayor of the city, Milan Bandic, announced there were to be no political speeches at the city's Maksimir Park.

"There is only one Zagreb beans dish and I won't give you the recipe," he told onlookers, "we have eight lines and nobody mustn't wait, not even a minute.

"Let's get some beans."

Many local residents joined the mayor in creating bean dishes to hand out among those gathered.

Also known as May Day and International Workers' Day, events have been held throughout the world to mark May 1st.

Lithuanians, for example, kicked off international Labour Day by beginning a record five day weekend, news 24 reports, with a free day announced on Friday and an extra day's holiday on Monday due to Mothers Day' falling in the country on Sunday.
