Croatia could finalise EU accession in 2009
08 January 2008
The premiers of Austria and the Czech Republic have said Croatia should be able to finalise accession to the European Union in 2009.
The two prime ministers and other senior officials met earlier this week in Vienna and reaffirmed their commitment to accelerate the accession process that would lead to Croatia becoming a full member in 2010.
"Both our countries support Croatia's entry to the European Union and we believe the new [Croatian] government will be able to meet the necessary criteria for entry in 2009," said Austrian chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer.
Czech chancellor Mirek Topolanek agreed that the Czech Republic will play a "leading role" in Croatia's accession negotiations while it takes its turn in the EU presidency in the first six months of 2009.
Croatia's new prime minister, Ivo Sanader, is also focusing on EU accession. He is due to announce the new coalition government on January 11th.
