Croatia edges closer to EU membership
21 April 2008
Croatia has moved a step closer to securing membership in the EU after it opened talks on energy and transport with the union.
The country's government needs to agree on 35 policy areas before it is admitted into the EU and has already started on them.
EU governments said in a statement: "The aim of the conference (a meeting with Croat officials) was to open negotiations on two further new chapters."
As a result of the EU negotiations, Croatia will become a much easier and attractive place to visit. With improvements to the transport system planned, tourists will find it easier to explore the Balkans country.
Croatia must meet all of the key benchmarks by the end of this year and it will then hope to finish negotiations with the EU by June 2009.
Recently Croatia was praised by the New Zealand foreign minister who is preparing a visit to the country.
