Croatia 'finally' given Europe date

Following in the footsteps of Bulgaria and Romania, Croatia has moved another step closer to becoming part of the European Union (EU).

European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso announced plans to conclude Croatian accession negotiations by autumn next year.

"Finally, Croatia is given a date," remarked Bernd Posselt MEP, the EU spokesperson for the so-called Adriatic paradise.

"This is finally a recognition of everything Croatia has done in the past years to place itself firmly on the European path – I am confident Croatia will fulfil the remaining criteria in this time in order to justify the trust we are placing in it."

He went on to express his hope that the achievement could be made even earlier - possibly by spring 2009, before European elections.

Accession talks to put Croatia on the road to become the 28th member state of the EU began in October 2005.

As well as signalling a further boost to the Croatian economy, the development would enable holidaymakers to travel freely within Europe and spend the common currency.
