Croatia holiday: Green light for 'fascinating' new natural reserve

Plans have gone ahead to establish Croatia's twelfth natural reserve, presenting yet another sight-seeing opportunity for anyone who decides to rent a villa or apartment in the country this year.

According to Balkan Travellers, authorities in Zagreb gave the green light for the implementation of the new park, which is expected to cover Croatia's stretch of the Neretva river valley.

"The Neretva river is one of the most fascinating Balkan waterways," explained the publication.

"It runs mainly through Herzegovina, forming a spectacular gorge in its central part and passing through the picturesque town of Mostar with its popular Old Bridge," it continued.

Around 22 kilometres of the 220-kilometre riverbed is situated in Croatia, where the Neretva flows into the Adriatic Sea.

Ecologists in the eastern European hotspot have given their blessing to the plans, as they believe the development will encourage local residents to look after the environment and refrain from using pesticides, for example.

There has also been speculation that tangerines grown in the area will be touted as a local export brand, to be sold all around Europe.
