Croatia honours dead singer
27 December 2007
Residents in Croatia have voted Macedonian singer Tose Proeski as their Person of the Year 2007.
Mr Proeski died in a car crash in Croatia in October and took 48 per cent of the vote from readers of Croatian internet site Dnevnik.hr.
The much-loved singer was massively popular across the Balkans and his death sent shockwaves throughout the region.
Known by some as the Elvis Presley of the Balkans, Mr Proeski's death was greeted with great sadness particularly in Macedonia.
The government of the country pronounced October 17th, the day after he died, to be a national day of mourning and the government has since given him the title 'Honorable Citizen of Macedonia'.
He received a full state funeral, including military honour, and the ceremony was attended by many foreign delegates including ambassadors from the US and EU.
The 26-year-old had hits with songs such as My Secret, If You Look Into My Eyes and most recently Tie Me To You.
