Croatia joins green-themed marine organisation
27 February 2008
Croatia has become the latest country to join a major organisation aimed at sustaining the world's marine life.
Promoting improvements in the quality, health and safety of the work carried out by marine and underwater engineering companies, the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) now has representation from 50 destinations around the globe.
"We strive for the highest possible standards with a balance of risk and cost in relation to health and safety, technology, quality and efficiency, environmental awareness and protection; and to achieve and sustain self-regulation in the industry," explained Hugh Williams, the trade association's chief executive.
He went on to highlight that member countries join one or more of IMCA's divisions according to their own areas of operation and expertise, be they diving, marine life, offshore surveys or remote systems.
The move marks another step up in Croatia's environmental standing, with the country's booming property market even attributed in part to its eco-friendly building regulations.
As they take significant account of the preservation of the Adriatic coastline, the rules prohibit construction of any developments within 100 metres of the shore.
