Croatia to become member of EU in 2010

The Croatian foreign minister has said that the country will become a member of the EU in 2010, making it all the easier for people to enjoy Croatian holidays.

Gordan Jandrokovic has been in talks with the EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn over the possibility of Croatia entering the EU.

Mr Rehn said: "There is a renewed dynamism in the EU accession process of Croatia 'I share the goals ... with regards to opening several chapters in coming weeks and months, if Croatia is able to meet the benchmarks."

Discussions about Croatia joining the EU began back in 2005 but Mr Jandrokovic has now said that during the meeting he "especially emphasised Croatia's readiness to do whatever it takes to meet the criteria for full membership and to become a member of the EU in 2010".

Croatia recently also recently strengthened its ties with Europe by joining up to NATO.
