Croatia to benefit from 'enhanced European perspective'
07 March 2008
More official funding is to be plunged into Croatia and its fellow Balkan countries, it has emerged.
Representatives for the European Commission outlined plans to "enhance the European perspective" and boost Croatia travel by supporting the economic development of the continent's eastern destinations.
Olli Rehn, the commissioner for enlargement, said the "time has come" to move towards visa-free travel to the EU for citizens of the western Balkans.
"Within the EU, there is an unwavering will to support the people of the western Balkans in opting for European values and living standards," he remarked.
He added: "It is the leaders and people of the region who will determine whether their countries, through reforms, will move decisively towards a European future, marked by increased stability and prosperity."
As well as increased scholarships for Croatian students to learn in the EU, programmes and agencies are being lined up to facilitate contact and cooperation between the continent's scientific and educational institutions.
Culture, youth, employment policy, social issues and environment protection will also be addressed under the proposals.
