Croatia travel: Island exploration a 'charming' Med alternative

More American travel enthusiasts are opting to 'island-hop' in Croatia as it offers a less crowded and less expensive option than other Mediterranean destinations, it has been suggested.

According to the Seattle Times, the Adriatic hotspot is the now one of the top choices on the wishlists of US sailing enthusiasts in particular.

The publication notes that 200,000 Americans chose a Croatia holiday last year, which was double numbers from the past few years.

"From Split, we headed out to Brac - Croatia's largest island - and the timeless, charming town of Bol," remarked the newspaper's travel team, describing nearby beach Zlatni Rat as "an undulating collection of smooth pebbles that sticks straight out into the sea and shifts daily".

Individuals keen on island-hopping are advised by the team that boat and ferry trips depart daily from Hvar to a half a dozen islands, including Vis ("a hotspot for food and celebrities"), Korcula, Bisevo and the Blue Grotto - a popular snorkelling and diving spot.

The majority of American travellers fly into Split, from where they can formulate a unique and independent exploration of Croatia and the particular islands which take their fancy.
