Croatia travel: Zagreb 'coming into its own'

Croatia's capital city of Zagreb proved to be a veritable travel "find" for one set of Adriatic enthusiasts, it has emerged.

Globe-trekkers at US publication the Indy Star noted that although the city is not yet a fully-fledged tourist destination, it undoubtedly makes an impression on culture-seekers and independent travellers who prefer to rent out an apartment or villa and immerse themselves in local environs.

"It feels like a find," they wrote of Zagreb, adding: "The capital is coming into its own with its grand architecture and cafes."

The team went on to point out that eastern Europe is attracting a growing number of US travel fans, in spite of the current "faltering value" of the dollar.

Acknowledging the growth in popularity of Croatian villas, apartments and other accommodation, they suggested that people avail of cheaper and even free sights and areas of interest.

The newspaper's European travel expert, Rick Steves, concluded by confirming that the continent's greatest attractions are "the cheap or free ones": "The less you spend, the more you experience."

An added summer attraction is Zagreb's International Folklore Festival, a showcase of musical and theatrical talent taking place from July 16th to 20th.
