Croatia travel 'well worth' the effort
03 March 2008
Croatia's variety of accommodation options and "outstanding" natural beauty make it a country well worth visiting, according to one travel enthusiast
Writing for the South African Independent Online, Judelle Drake pointed out that the eastern European mecca has had substantial tourist publicity recently, thereby stimulating the interest of a steady flow of visitors.
She went on to explain that Croatia's many food markets are an "eye-opener" for fast-food-weary westerners.
"Croatians, on the whole, do not favour pre-cooked or frozen foods - they go to open-air markets in the mornings with their baskets over their arms to choose fresh vegetables, fruit, fish or meat for the day," she noted.
On one occasion, the gastronomic explorer ventured to Zagreb's "huge" outlet, which stands out as a result of being covered in red umbrellas and having "a wonderful vibe".
As an added bonus, stall-holders offer appreciative visitors and holidaymakers free samples of their fresh produce, such as cherries and even wine.
Concluding that the highlight of her Croatia vacation was the Plitvice Lakes area - a major tourist attraction since the late 19th century - Ms Drake observed that the national park became a Unesco-listed heritage site in 1979 in recognition of its "outstanding natural beauty".
Located between capital city Zagreb and Zadar on the coast, the park contains 16 lakes which are connected by a series of waterfalls.
