Croatia 'will not be discouraged from EU accession'
17 July 2008
The current situation with the European Union will not discourage Croatia in its attempts to become the 28th member of the bloc, it has been claimed.
In an interview with Le Figaro, Stjepan Mesic said he expects the EU to resolve issues surrounding the Lisbon Treaty, EUobserver.com reports.
Mr Mesic told the French newspaper he expects institutional problems will need to be resolved before Croatia's accession can proceed.
However, he insisted the country will "speed up the rhythm" of reforms and be ready to join the EU in 2009.
"For our part, we intend to close all negotiations chapters before the end of 2009. Our efforts will be rewarded," he added.
Meanwhile, visitors from countries currently in the EU have been informed they will no longer have duty free liquids, aerosols or gels confiscated at Croatian airports after the country was added to an EU-approved list.
The EU Aviation Security Regulatory Committee passed the legislation, which allows all passengers arriving from and making connecting flights to EU airports to retain all their items when passing through Croatian customs.
