Croatian high jumper records 24th win in a row

An ASK Split Club meeting has witnessed world high-jump champion Blanka Vlasic record her 24th consecutive victory in her hometown.

The Croatian, European athlete of the year, cleared 2.01 metres in Split, the 47th time she has beaten the two metre mark in competition, the European Athletics website reports.

It brings her closer to Sweden's Kajsa Bergqvist, the all-time second ranked jumper with 52 clearances over two metres.

She is still some way short of Bulgaria's Stefka Kostadinova, however, who achieved 130 jumps over two metres before retiring in 1997.

Despite a "crowd pleasing" attempt at 2.04 metres, Vlasic was unable to record a new world record, but coach Boajn Marinovic remained "very pleased" with the quality of his athlete's jumps.

She had told Reuters a world record jump may be required to win gold at the Beijing Olympics.

Vlasic told the agency she expects competition to be fierce due to the prestige of the Games.
