Croatian journo smiles through threat of dental disaster
22 January 2008
One of Croatia's top TV journalists has smiled his way into the good books of his bosses.
According to Ananova, reporter Damir Matkovic handed an expenses bill for $26,000 (£13,000) to HTV chiefs following dental treatment to keep his pearly whites in viewer-pleasing condition.
The quirky news specialist explained that Mr Matkovic, whose popularity is apparently based on his glamorous grin, had periodontitis.
Causing an individual's gums to become inflamed, the condition can ultimately to lead to tooth loss.
The enterprising journalist eventually persuaded his employers that his smile was worth the substantial sum it took to safeguard against a dental disaster.
One of his many fans told Ananova that the prospect of life without the screen star's smile was too much to bear.
"I only ever watch news programmes because of him - I couldn't imagine him with no teeth, not being able to flash that lovely smile of his," declared Zagreb resident Mirka Radicovic.
As well as the hard-hitting news provided by HTV, Croatian residents and visitors can enjoy the country's version of Big Brother and also 'Croatian Idol' on popular station Nova TV.
