Croatian poker pro thrills crowds at Vienna tournament
13 March 2008
A Croatian poker whizz has done his country proud in an 'east versus west' tournament.
Branimir Brunovic, who scooped the top spot in last year's PartyPoker European Challenge, failed to go home with the top prize this time around, but he was lauded for his expertise and showmanship.
With Vienna's Concord casino as a setting, Branimir played alongside fellow 'east' representatives including Russia's Sergey Pevzner and Estonian Kairit Leibold.
According to reports from observers, the east team had the cup prize in their sights right up until the final hurdle, when Croatia's representative was played out of the game along with Pevzner and the Estonian.
Germany's Bjoern Kaersten, a 22-year-old apprentice bank clerk, finished first and was closely followed by UK qualifier Jack Powell, an online poker pro from London.
A spokesperson for PartyPoker admitted that the organisation "could have sworn" the east's team would win.
Last year, 32-year-old Branimir, who is a trainee lawyer from Zagreb, left Vienna with 190,160 euros (just over £145,500) in his pocket.
"With the legal training, it is going to be very useful to have all the extra money," he said of his success, adding his prediction that poker "has a big future" in his native Croatia.
