28 April 2008
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal worth around an initial £15.8 million for Croatian international midfielder Luka Modric, according to reports.
The 22 year-old Dinamo Zagreb star is expected to sign after competing for his country at this summer's Euro 2008 championship.
A host of clubs, including Newcastle United and Chelsea, are believed to have been beaten for the winger's signature.
Modric, though, insisted he was proud to be signing for Spurs.
He told the BBC: "I'm happy to be joining such a big club. It will be a real pleasure to play in the English league.
"It is the best in Europe, with three English clubs in the semi-finals of the Champions League."
Modric currently plays in Zagreb, which is the capital and largest city in Croatia.
It is in northern Croatia and is a popular destination for visitors to the country, with an approximate population of 784,900.
