Croatian star knocked out in Hamburg

Ivan Ljubicic, the Croatian tennis player and world number 29, has been defeated by Nikolay Davydenko at the Hamburg Masters tennis tournament.

It is the first time the Croat has lost to his Russian opponent in four years after three successive wins over the fourth seed.

The match finished 6-4, 6-1 in favour of Davydenko after one hour and 24 minutes play, leaving the overall score between the two players tied at 3-3.

Davydenko, who faced a tough first set in which there were five breaks of serve, said his confidence is recovering after a third round exit in Rome last week.

Commenting after his match against Ljubicic, he said: "My tennis is still the same but I am better mentally."

Meanwhile, twenty-three year-old top seed Sofia Arvidsson has won the $75k Zagreb Ladies Open.

She won her tenth ladies tour title after a two set final, securing a 7-6, 6-2 victory over French sixth seed Severine Bremond following her defeat of home favourite Jelena Tosic in the quarter-finals.
