Croatian visitors reminded of new meat and dairy rules
03 June 2008
Foreign tourists to Croatia have been reminded they are no longer allowed to take their own meat and dairy products into the country.
Gordan Jerbic, head of the veterinary section at the Croatian agriculture ministry, told Reuters the ban took effect on June 1st.
It was passed in line with European Union (EU) directives after a request from the European Commission, he said.
Mr Jerbic claimed it is a move the country had to make if it is to be successful in gaining accession to the EU.
He added: "The idea is to prevent a possible spread of animal diseases from contaminated food. It is the same in all EU states."
As a result of the change in legislation, visitors to the country will have even more reason than before to sample the country's cuisine.
