Croatia's EU hopes boosted
10 July 2008
Politicians from Albania, Croatia, Georgia, Hungary, Kosovo, Montenegro and Slovakia have assembled in Dubrovnik in a boost to the country's European Union (EU) hopes.
Southeast European Times reports the words of David Daly, the head of the Department of Croatia at the European Commission's General Administration, have been welcomed by Croatian officials.
Mr Daly stated Croatia will complete the technicalities of its negotiations by the end of 2009, despite concerns regarding Ireland's rejection of the EU treaty last month.
Despite the newspaper reporting renewed optimism, Croatian prime minister Ivo Sanader insisted the country was not "discouraged by the failure of some" to approve the treaty.
He added: "The EU always finds solutions to the serious problems so I believe it will
not only for the new members but for itself.
"I'm sure that all of the 27 countries will accept the Lisbon Treaty. I also hope that will happen during Croatia's negotiation process."
Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France which currently holds the EU presidency has warned the EU will not be able to take in new members without the treaty.
However, he insisted further enlargement is wanted and he will visit Ireland on July 21st to seek a resolution.
