EU beckons for Croatia
25 April 2008
The EU enlargement commissioner believes that Croatia will be the next member state of the union.
Olli Rehn has talked up the prospect of Croatia joining by the end of the decade, it was reported yesterday.
Speaking to the editors of the WAC media group, Mr Rehn said: "Croatia will most probably be the 28th EU member state. We stick to the principle of each individual country's achievements in fulfilling the EU criteria."
He also said that the negotiations with Croatia should be concluded by 2009 and after that the Balkan country can join the EU.
It is a further boost to the country as becoming a member of the EU will mean an increase in the level of tourism and people choosing to stay in Croatian villas.
Earlier this month Lithuania became the latest country to back Croatia for EU membership. Croatia is also set to become a member of NATO.
