EU creates 'roadmap' for Croatia's accession
30 April 2008
The European Union is seeking a "conditional roadmap" for Croatia's accession to the union.
It is hoped that negotiations on the country's move to join the 27-strong group could be finished by the end of 2009.
These moves and deadlines were announced by the European Commissioner following the fourth meeting regarding Croatia accession.
Olli Rehn, the commissioner, said the country needs to make reforms in many areas, including justice reforms, corruption and public administration.
However, the country has been praised for its implementation of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, which has proceeded without "major difficulty".
Gordan Jandrokovic, the Croatian foreign minister, said they fully understood the challenges ahead of them.
"There will be no alternative to the goal of joining the EU," he added.
Mr Jandrokovic stated that the moves will not only help the country's accession to the EU but also improve living standards for the people.
Mr Rehn has recently talked up the prospect of the country joining the EU by the end of the decade.
