EU media programme to boost Croatia's film industry
18 March 2008
Croatia's film industry looks set to receive a boost following the country's entry into Europe's prestigious Media 2007 programme.
The programme, which provides funding for and distributes audiovisual output, is intended to promote Europe's cultural diversity.
"Media 2007 will help Croatia promote Croatian films and distribute them more widely across borders, and allow more audiovisual works from the rest of Europe to find an audience in Croatia," remarked Viviane Reding, EU commissioner for information, society and media.
She added her belief that Croatia's participation will "give a push" for more active cooperation between the Croatian film industry and those of other European countries.
As well as facilitating finance and support for the transition towards digital technology in the development, distribution and promotion of audiovisual works, the programme will aid cooperation between individual film schools and the training of Croatian filmmakers.
The eastern European hotspot is home to an increasingly vibrant film industry with its abundance of spectacular, unspoilt locations and exceptional local talent - both in front of the cameras and behind the scenes.
Some of the country's notable cinematic achievements include Arsen A. Ostojic's Ta divna splitska noc ('That Wonderful Night in Split'), which was nominated for the European Discovery award in 2004, and Ognjen Svilicic's recent Armin, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and went on to scoop the Best Foreign Language gong at this year's Palm Springs International Film Festival.
