'Easy airport access' makes Croatia a better prospect

Better access from UK airports is contributing to Croatia's rise in popularity among travellers.

A spokesman for the burgeoning mecca's national tourist office also attributed increasing press exposure to its surge in popularity.

Flights to Croatia are currently available from Gatwick, Birmingham and Bristol, with carriers including British Airways and Croatia Airlines.

According to the eastern European country's tourism officials, these factors led to 275,000 British holidaymakers travelling across the Adriatic last year, while 150 tour operators currently offer services to the country.

"It is very popular all over, up north from Rijeka and down south to Dubrovnik," confirmed a spokesperson.

Croatia's islands, of which there are more than 1,000, were also singled out as a particular attraction for curious culture-seekers.

The tourist office representative deemed Korcula, Krk, Cres and Losinj winners in the holiday stakes, with many tourists keen to visit islands which are reasonably populated and easily accessed from the mainland.

Earlier this year, travel enthusiast Sheila Norman-Culp reported to the Associated Press that island-hopping in Croatia is a viable alternative for people who consider traditional holiday destinations "too expensive, crowded or over-developed".ADNFCR-1197-ID-18466615-ADNFCR
