Europe Day marked as commission visits Croatia
09 May 2008
A European Commission delegation was in Zagreb yesterday as Europe Day was celebrated in Croatia.
Zagreb University National Library was host to politicians such as Vincent Degert, the president of the delegation, Javno reports.
The visit comes as the third anniversary of discussions regarding Croatia's potential accession to the European Union fast approaches.
Mr Degert told the Croatian news provider the country has made "significant progress" in that time but still faces "important challenges and high expectations".
He added: "The European Commission and the members of the partnership have been giving the target to have Croatia join the European Union, as it is in our interest to enrich the members of the Union."
European commissioner Oli Rehn was in the country recently for European Union negotiations.
It was claimed Croatia could join the 27-strong group by the end of next year, provided conditions regarding the implementation of reforms and deadlines are met.
