Financial boost for Croatian film industry
28 July 2008
A new Croatian Audio Visual Centre has been established in the country, doubling the budget of its previous film support system, it has been revealed.
Movie production is set to increase by around 50 per cent annually in the next few years as a new system of subsidies means $15 million (£7.5 million) is ploughed into the industry each year, Variety reports.
It will enable producers will be able to apply for up to $750,000 in grants, around half the cost of a typical Croatian feature, and is expected to raise the number of movies being made from around six movies to eight or ten a year.
Albert Kapovic from the centre told the magazine the types of film covered by the subsidies could range from animation to documentaries.
He added: "It is important to have a strong domestic industry. In Europe it is always those countries with a strong national industry that are best equipped to weather crises."
The news will come as a boost to the Croatian film industry, which was recently showcased as part of the Libertas film festival in Dubrovnik earlier this month.
