Gastro travel in Croatia

More and more people are planning their holidays around food these days and "gastro-travel" is set to be one of the hottest trends in 2008, according to experts writing in 4hoteliers magazine.

US restaurant consultants Joseph Baum & Michael Whiteman say that the opportunity to have great food experiences is becoming an important part of any holiday.

Gastro-tourism in Croatia is alive and well and people are booking accommodation in Croatia based on the ability to tour local markets, take cooking classes and enjoy local delicacies.

An important part of the experience is having "interaction with local residents" and the "chance to learn about history and geography" of the country, said Messres Baum and Whiteman.

Wine and food tours are especially popular in Croatia, visiting wine estates for a guided tour by local experts and having lunch.

A villa in Istria, near the coastal town of Rovinj, is a great base from which to wander fabulous food markets, visit wine estates and restaurants.

At this time of year, delectable truffles, mushrooms and prosciutto are available.
