Gold medal brought home to Croatia by high-jump champ

A Croatian high-jump enthusiast has done her country proud at the World Indoor Championships in Spain.

Split native Blanka Vlasic took home the indoor gold medal from Valencia, adding to her equivalent gong for the outdoor event.

The 24-year-old started the competition by jumping over 184 and 191 centimetres "with flying colours", reports Javno.

Although she missed on jumping 188 and 193 centimetres, she kept going and jumped over 199 centimetres on her first attempt.

Following a further triumph over the 201-centimetre jump, she scooped the gold by conquering 203 centimetres on her second try.

Blanka, whose personal best stands at 207 centimetres, was named after Casablanca - the city where her father competed at the 1983 Mediterranean Games.

In another recent sporting triumph for Croatia, poker whizz Branimir Brunovic did his country proud in the 'east versus west' PartyPoker European Challenge.

Although the trainee lawyer from Zagreb failed to go home with the top prize, judges praised his expertise and showmanship and admitted they "could have sworn" he would win.

In the previous year's tournament, 32-year-old Branimir scooped a prize of 190,160 euros (just over £145,500), which he said would prove "very useful" for his legal training in Croatia.
