Holiday Croatia: Central Zagreb 'buzzing with life'
06 March 2008
Croatian capital Zagreb presents visitors with a well-preserved "historic fabric", according to one travel expert.
Seasoned globe-trekkers at Turkish publication Today's Zaman claimed that the capital is similar to other European cities by virtue of its wide city squares, "great" urban planning, palaces, chateaus and churches.
"With its cobblestone streets, whose every inch is testimony to its history, Zagreb is certain to leave you with enough curiosity and enthusiasm to stroll around the whole city," they remarked.
Ban Jelacic Square, at the heart of the city, is described as "buzzing with life" as Today's Zaman's reporters are drawn to the coffee aromas emanating from its myriad cafes.
"If you stay in the square until the late evening, you will see these cafes overfill with customers late into the night," they observed.
To conclude, the team noted a quirky and perhaps less-known titbit of trivia regarding Croatia and a particular 60-year-old shop in Zagreb.
Drawing innumerable tourists every year, the shop sells custom-made neckties which draw on the country's status as the "inventor" of the sartorial staple.
Legend has it that Croatian soldiers joined the French army in the 16th and 17th centuries and wore necktie-like pieces of fabric to distinguish themselves from other soldiers.
