Island hopping on the Dalmatian coast
11 December 2007
No holiday in Croatia would be complete without a cruise around the islands and there are plenty of options, whether you rent accommodation in Croatia or step onboard.
The islands are in fact the peaks of a submerged mountain chain, some of which have sheer cliff faces and some gentle slopes.
The unspoilt Kornati chain includes 147 white-stone islands, all uninhabited and including the Kornati National Park.
By contrast Hvar is a fashionable anchorage for glamorous cruiseships and super yachts, with tavernas and restaurants catering to discerning tastes.
On Piskera you can climb to the island's summit and enjoy views of the Adriatic.
The lighthouse island of Blitvenica is another possible stop, the views from the beacon providing more magnificent views.
Popular stopping points along the coast include Zadar, which Alfred Hitchcock described as having the most beautiful sunsets in the world.
Take a morning swim straight off the deck in the blue Adriatic or just sit on deck enjoying the view and waiting for the dolphins to come racing along beside the boat.
Island hopping along Croatia's coastline is an experience not to be missed.
