07 February 2008
The region of Istria in Croatia is growing increasingly popular for the gastronomic delights it offers, it has been claimed.
According to the Times, the area is a "culinary hotbed", offering al fresco dining and fine restaurants.
The newspaper notes that Istria was the first region in the country to open such restaurants and introduce a rating system.
"Istria prides itself on being the gastronomic heart of Croatia, drawing influences from Italy to Hungary via Austria (and occasionally Spain)," it noted.
Visitors to Croatia may want to consider dining at Toklarija in Sovinjsko Polje, which offers guests a variety of fine dishes - some of which have been taken away by chefs from other countries.
Istria also produces honey of "outstanding2 quality, according to the local tourist board.
Beekeepers in the region have a "nomadic way of life", moving around the region to extract honey from the best hives.
