Istrian destination 'beautiful and unspoiled'
14 February 2008
Istria's largest city, Pula, is the ideal destination for families, according to one travel enthusiast.
Roberto Martinez, the manager of Swansea City football club, told the Wales Western Mail that the Croatian hotspot had left him with some of his fondest childhood memories.
"The coast was beautiful and there was so much for us to do as a family, the land was unspoiled and we just relaxed and enjoyed each other's company," he explained.
He went on to point out that holidays for him "were always about spending time on the beach with my sister or playing football with my dad".
Like the rest of Istria, culture seekers are drawn by Pula's mild climate, tame sea and unspoiled nature, as well as the city's long tradition of wine production, fishing and shipbuilding.
A number of summer film festivals have also taken place in Pula's first-century amphitheatre, known by locals as the Arena, while nearby Brijuni national park attracts both pop stars and world leaders.
Low-cost carrier Ryanair has operated flights to Pula, which has official Croatian-Italian bilingualism, since November 2006, although the bases of Trieste and Zagreb are also nearby.
