Koprivnica scoops green gong for 'sustainable mobility'

The Croatian city of Koprivnica has scooped a prestigious environmental award.

European environment commissioner Stavros Dimas handed over the European Mobility Week gong this week.

Given out on an annual basis, the accolade exists to promote "sustainable mobility" in towns and cities by encouraging people to use low or non-polluting alternatives to cars.

Announcing the winner at a ceremony in Brussels, the commissioner explained that European Mobility Week aims to improve public health and the quality of life in urban areas.

"I want to congratulate Koprivnica on its outstanding achievements in this area," he said, before going on to praise the efforts of over 2,000 other cities that took part in Mobility Week.

Last September, Koprivnica launched a three-year 'streets for people' programme, intended to make all public buildings, pavements and road crossings accessible to individuals with disabilities.

Residents of the city also re-allocated almost two kilometres of roads to non-motorised traffic in order to promote walking and biodiesel-fuelled public transport.

Neighbouring areas in Croatia are now reported to be following in Koprivnica's green footsteps, with "young" destination Bjelovar also entering this year's Mobility Week contest.ADNFCR-1197-ID-18467954-ADNFCR
