Lovers of golden asparagus head for Croatia in springtime
07 January 2008
The people of the Croatian province of Istria are rightly proud of their delicious organic food and in the springtime their healthy asparagus is unbeatable.
From March 28th to 30th the Golden Asparagus international gastronomic competition and festival will be held in the northern Istrian town of Buje.
There will be tasting activities and grading of the asparagus dishes as well as a programme of culture and entertainment.
In the south-east of Istria, the Lovran asparagus festival is in early April, shortly after Easter.
The coast of Lovran is famous for its wild growing asparagus with a flavour that is especially valued by gourmets.
During the festival approximately ten to 15 restaurants in and around Lovran offer specialities based on wild asparagus. The event closes with the making of the "grand omelette" (made in a two metre diameter pan).
There is also cultural entertainment, including folk music featuring the accordion players of the Liburnija region.
A villa in Istria will allow you to enjoy the many Istrian gastronomic treats, including truffles, Istrian ham, olive oil and fine wines.
