Momjan Muscat cycling trail in Istria
07 January 2008
Cycle through terraced vineyards and green fields in the beautiful landscape of Istria on the Momjan Muscat trail.
The 32.8 kilometre trail is mostly on sealed roads and takes from two to 2.5 hours to ride (not including wine tasting and eating breaks) so if you're based in accommodation in Istria this is a lovely day trip.
Highlights include the magnificent views from the walls of Buje, the wine at Momjan Muscat, and the sculptures in the rocky landscape of Marusici.
The town of Buje has historically been referred to as the "guardian of Istria" due to the pre-eminent position of its impressive medieval walls.
After Buje the trail leads through the villages of Bibali, Krug and Smilovici to Momjan, another magnificent medieval citadel place built on a mighty rock.
Here you can explore the Istrian wine road, tasting quality wine in the cellars of local vintners. Don't miss the world's best Muscat.
The trail then follows the borders of the forest park of Kornarija to the village of Triban where you can visit the church of St George from the 17th century and admire the stucco work and frescoes of its magnificent interior.
