Montenegro picked as the next big thing
11 January 2008
A holiday in Montenegro should be a New Year's resolution for keen travellers, according to the Age newspaper in Australia.
"In the inland areas of Montenegro you've got huge lakes, snow-capped mountains, monasteries carved into cliff-faces and crystal-clear rivers," writer Ben Groundwater explained.
He particularly recommends the ancient city of Budva. Built on a small peninsula, this beautiful town is thought to be one of the oldest urban settlements on the Adriatic coast.
In legend, Budva was founded in the 5th century BC by a Phoenician hero and has been ruled and influenced by the Greeks, the Romans and the Venetians over time.
Over 20 kilometres of coastline make this area an increasingly popular location for a holiday in Montenegro and there are no less than 17 beaches.
Exploring the narrow streets and squares of the town you will come across many exquisite buildings, including the churches of St Trojica, St Ivan, St Bogorodica and St Sava.
There are also a number of historic monasteries at Stanjevici, Podostrog, Rezevici and Gradiste.
In summer it is famous for the many outdoor theatrical and musical performances, both from Montenegro and abroad.
