Netherlands gets behind Croatia's EU bid
10 April 2008
The Netherlands has voiced its support of Croatia joining the EU and has encouraged the country to meet the conditions required.
Croatia has been a candidate for EU membership since 2004 and is looking to join the EU in 2009 but must first meet certain criteria.
Maxine Verhagen, Netherlands foreign minister, said: "Croatia belongs in Europe, but must meet all conditions before it can accede to the European Union. The Netherlands supports Croatia's European ambitions and adopts a critical but fair position. Meeting the accession criteria is more important than naming an accession date."
The Netherlands is also set to offer financial and technical support for Croatia as it attempts to take the steps to become a full member of Europe.
With Croatia part of the EU it will become even more attractive to holidaymakers going there for a relaxing break, many of whom choose Croatian villas to stay in.
