'New destinations' like Croatia upping the property ante

Montenegro, Croatia and other eastern European destinations are increasingly competing with more established countries in the continent's property market, another influential organisation has affirmed.

Representatives for the Association of International Property Professionals (AIPP) noted that many investors will still "stick to what they know" when it comes to purchases – especially in times of economic certainty.

Despite this, AIPP chief executive Paul Owen maintained that attractive prices across the Adriatic are drawing attention away from countries like Spain, France and even Bulgaria.

"There are more and more destinations out there [but] that does not mean everyone is saying: 'That is it for the emerging markets, let's stick our money in Spain'," he remarked.

"Bulgaria is competing with lots of new destinations – whether it is Malaysia, Brazil or Montenegro," he added.

Economic authority Finance Daily recently noted that Istria in particular is rising to prominence as one of Croatia's key property hotspots.

The publication singled out a boom in the popularity of Croatian villas and apartments among holidaymakers and ex-pats alike in areas including Porec, Rovinj and Pula, while the regions of Kvarner Riviera and northern Dalmatia are apparently "ones to watch".
