Newcastle bid for Croatian Modric

Newcastle United have bid £12 million for Dinamo Zagreb's star player Luka Modric, according to reports.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who is also a highly-rated member of the Croatian national team, has also been linked with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

A source close to the play told Goal.com: "Mamic [Dinamo Zagreb's vice-chairman] came back to Croatia and insisted that Luca is close to moving to Newcastle. He always talked about Spain but Portsmouth’s Croatian star Niko Kranjcar has told him to move to England."

He added that the money that Newcastle are offering is "fantastic".

The talented youngster is set to play in Euro 2008 for Croatia this summer before moving onto a different club.

Modric currently plays in Zagreb, which is the capital and largest city in Croatia. It is in northern Croatia and is a popular destination for visitors of the country. It has an approximate population of 784,900 as of 2006.
