Opel tops list of Croatia's favourite cars

People living in Croatia have been going car crazy, according to new figures.

Research group Promocija Plus revealed that a record number of new vehicles were bought last year, continuing a trend that has developed in the last decade.

The agency, which specialises in studies of the automotive market, noted that more than 80,000 cars were sold in 2007, compared to 78,775 the year before and 69,600 in 2005.

German model Opel proved to be the most popular, attributed by analysts to its low price and economic running costs.

It has been predicted that Croatia's 4.5 million inhabitants will set their sights on more expensive models as a result of joining the European Union – expected to happen within a few years.

Coming in at number two on the list of Croats' automobiles of choice was the French Renault, followed by the Volkswagen - viewed by many as the "iconic brand" of the Balkans.

Unsurprisingly given the boom in Croatian tourism, the figures also indicated a steady rise in car rental figures throughout the region.
