Open skies agreement 'will provide new options' for Croatia travel
31 March 2008
Travel between Croatia and the US looks set to become easier as officials have agreed on a new open skies arrangement.
Following a two-day negotiation in Croatian capital Zagreb earlier this month, transport authorities from both countries came to their decision.
Under the new plans, private airlines - and not governments - will decide which cities will be served, as well as the frequency of flights, equipment used and prices charged.
Most promisingly for Croatia holiday enthusiasts, there will be no limits as to the number of US and Croatian airlines that will be allowed to serve both countries.
"[This] agreement lays the groundwork for future air service between the United States and Croatia that will provide new options for travellers as well as economic benefits to both countries," remarked US transport secretary Mary Peters.
She confirmed that the new open skies agreement would create more possibilities for people from both countries to move between the destinations.
Adriatic analysts have noted that this makes the development a veritable coup for independent-minded holidaymakers who prefer to design their own itinerary and rent a villa or apartment instead of staying in a hotel.
