Party away winter in Split
18 December 2007
February's carnival in Split offers people on vacation in Croatia a chance to party away the winter in style.
The traditional pre-Lenten celebrations see the residents of this Croatian coastal city dressing up in elaborate costumes and dancing in the streets.
The most popular costumes follow a Venetian theme and you will see Pierrot and Harlequin outfits everywhere.
Parades, masked balls, fireworks displays and historic displays ensure locals and visitors will have the time of their lives.
The most famous landmark in Split is the palace of Roman emperor Diocletian but the whole of the town centre has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1979.
There are many other beautiful historic buildings that are the legacy of centuries of Austro-Hungarian and Venetian rule.
When you have finished partying there are two important archaeological museums to visit, one dedicated to antiquity and the other to the early medieval period.
Split enjoys a Mediterranean climate and is one of the sunniest places in Europe.
