Quarter-finals beckon for Croats at Slazenger Open
19 June 2008
Croatian tennis star Ivo Karlovic has matched the achievements of the country's footballers by progressing to the quarter-final stage of an international tournament abroad.
The six-foot-ten number two seed defeated Sam Querrey of the US 7-6, 7-6 in the Slazenger Open in Nottingham, UK.
He will now play Andreas Seppi at the Wimbledon warm-up tournament after the Italian won 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 against Eduardo Schwank of Argentina.
Karlovic, ranked 21st in the world, will not have to face the man directly behind him in the rankings as he defends his title, with Czech Radek Stepanek pulling out through injury.
Countryman Marin Cilic, the world number 53, also made his way into the quarter finals.
He posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over home favourite Alex Bogdanovic.
Karlovic is set to be the highest ranked Croatian player at this year's Wimbledon tennis championships at 18, with Ivan Ljubicic following closely behind as seed 26.
