'Record numbers make Croatian trips'

A record number of tourists moved towards or returned from the Adriatic coast in Croatia over the weekend, it is claimed.

Up to 200,000 vehicles are believed to have passed through the Lucko pay toll near Zagreb in both directions, javno.com reports.

This is said to be 5,000 more than the previous weekend and it is estimated by the news provider that as many as 800,000 tourists could have been on the country's roads this weekend.

Zaljko Piskor, collaborator at Zagreb-Lucko pay toll management, said around 112,000 moved towards the south, 5,000 more than last weekend and 1,300 more than during the same period last year.

In the opposite direction, around 84,000 are believed to have "returned home".

Mr Piskor added: "Next weekend we could even reach a high number of tourists and probably the same will happen in two weeks as the first of August falls on a Friday.

"Then we could reach the tourist record this summer."

It was speculated that 280,000 foreign visitors arrived in Croatia last Saturday, according to a report by Magyar Tavirati Iroda and cited by All Hungary News.

Traffic on the Croatian and Hungarian border was said to be heavy as people headed to areas like the Dalmatian coast for their holidays.
