Rowers make a splash in Zagreb

Around 1,000 rowers from nine countries have flocked to Zagreb for the 25th Croatia Open.

Over two days of racing on the Jarun rowing course, many of rowing's top stars competed, including the current world champions in the men's double, Iztok Cop and Luka Spik, from Slovenia.

The pair decided to attend the event instead of the spring regattas being held in Germany, perhaps seeing the attractiveness of the country which makes people visit Croatia.

Cop said after their victory: "To be honest, I was having some doubts about our victory in the finals, because our morning race really wasn't brilliant. I was relieved when we managed to put our act together and win the race."

More international crews were seen at the competition, although this was partly due to the shorter season as the Olympics looms on the horizon.

One of Zagreb's favourite sporting sons Niko Kranjcar was also doing his country proud, scoring the winner for Portsmouth last night in their game against West Ham United in the English Premier League.
