Sailing around Croatia 'like travelling back in time'

Opting for a sailing trip around Croatia is like travelling back in time, according to one Adriatic enthusiast.

Writing in Balkan Travellers, Ekaterina Petrova described her journey down the river Danube towards eastern Europe, during which the approach towards Croatia yielded views of "golden rolling hills, occasionally adorned by modest castles".

She noted that the port town of Vukovar contains numerous beautiful eighteenth-century and Baroque buildings, making a visit a steal for independent-minded travellers who prefer to do it their own way.

"Further to the east, Croatia's national park Kopacki Rit - one of Europe's largest natural marshes and home to many bird species, including heron, storks, wild duck, and even rare falcons and eagles - is a must stop for bird-watchers," she continued.

As the river is followed further, the last port before the border with Serbia, Ilok, pops into view.

Boasting a number of notable historical sites, the town reportedly offers "one of the best views over the Danube" to be found.

As Europe's second longest river, the Danube starts out in Germany's Black Forest and flows almost 3,000 kilometres eastwards into the Black Sea.

In addition to Croatia, it flows through nine countries including Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania Germany and the Ukraine.
